SIGNS A HOME SHOULD BE REWIRED

Knob and tube wiring is not the only reason a home should be rewired. And while rewiring may seem like a large investment, it’s well worth the cost to reduce the risk of electrical issues in the home. It can also improve the safety of a home, save money on electrical bills, increase a home’s electrical capacity, and add value to a property.

There are several warning signs that it’s time to rewire a house, including:

  • Frequently tripped circuit breakers

  • Discolored outlets and switches

  • Persistent burning smells

  • Flickering lights

  • Loose outlets

  • Arcs or sparks from an outlet

  • Buzzing or sizzling sounds

  • Aluminum wiring

  • Old wiring

SHOULD I REPLACE KNOB & TUBE WIRING?

Although knob and tube wiring is not inherently dangerous, it can degrade over time. Often, knob and tube wiring does not meet the needs of most modern appliances and could lead to electrical problems within a home. Older houses with such wiring should be inspected annually to ensure that the wiring is in proper working order.

The two biggest issues with knob and tube wiring include:

  • No ground wire – Modern wiring consists of three wires (positive, negative, and ground) that are surrounded by one plastic insulated cable. Knob and tube wiring, on the other hand, has only two wires (positive and negative) that are separated. A black and white wire goes through the house’s framing and meets at outlets, switches, and lighting fixtures to complete a circuit. As for a ground wire, which protects a home by diverting stray electricity away from the circuit and the framing of a house, there is not one. The problem with this is a lack of protection from short-circuiting, shock, and electrical fires when there is poor insulation.

  • Outdated insulation – Knob and tube wiring has rubber insulation that was not designed to handle the power needs of modern appliances. The continuous load from these appliances upon the wiring can cause the insulation to fail. Rubber insulation can cause problems because it can break down because of overheating or mechanical wear and tear. It is this breakdown of rubber insulation that necessitates the old wiring be replaced.
